Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects 25, 600 Australians and more than 2 million worldwide, most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20-40 however, it can affect all ages. MS is a chronic disease which affects the nervous system. The immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating of the nerves which results in nerve damage.
Nerve damage interferes with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal and optic nerves. These damaged cells begin to scar, these scars, depending on where they develop within the central nervous system, cause the symptoms of MS. Symptoms can vary in severity from mild to severe and the duration can also vary from person to person. Some people can be asymptomatic, showing no symptoms at all. Each case is unique to the patient.
Symptoms can include many of the following: loss or changes to concentration, memory, or reasoning. It can be slurring of words, difficulties swallowing, blurred vision, dizziness or vertigo, mood alterations, pain, tingling or numb feeling, muscle weakness, spasms, affected balance, and bladder and bowel problems. Symptoms from this disease are episodic, often a gradual onset, acute stages or progressive decline of function.
There is no cure for this disease, however, physiotherapy and medication that suppress the immune system can help with symptoms, and slow disease progression. Discussions with your doctor will help understand the progression and stages of this disease and to begin your treatment plan if you're newly diagnosed. This option is targeted for those long term sufferers, those that have struggled for too long and are looking for an alternative option.
