There is one thing for sure, Medicinal Cannabis is on the rise!
Over the last few years medicinal cannabis has become a talking hotspot! There are many components within medicinal cannabis and they are referred to as cannabinoids. There are hundreds of these components so understanding them all can feel like you need to be a scientist! So today we’re going to focus on two of these; THC and CBD and learning the difference between them.
THC - Tetrahydrocannabinol
This is one of the more commonly known cannabinoids found within cannabis, THC is the psychoactive component responsible for the ‘high’ associated with cannabis. However it is also helpful with pain relief, anxiety control, appetite stimulation and insomnia. Some patients report a positive mood alteration, and sensory stimulation. Most doctors have found that THC works better in conjunction with other compounds and has what they refer to as an ‘Entourage Effect’.
There are side effects to THC use, with patients reporting drowsiness, fatigue, reduced motor skills, paranoia and anxiety. It’s important to remember that side effects do affect people differently and consulting regularly with your doctor whilst you try new medication is essential.
CBD - Cannabidiol
CBD is found in both the cannabis plant and within hemp plants. This extract is so exciting because it is known to alleviate anxiety and inflammation. The World Health Organization has listed several ailments that CBD has the potential to treat: Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington’s disease, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, psychosis, pain, depression, cancer, hypoxia-ischemia injury, nausea, IBD, inflammatory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, infection and diabetes complications.
It's worthwhile to note that CBD does not have the psychoactive component that THC does making it more inviting to those who are concerned about the ‘high’ effect.
Cannabis extracts have also been linked to helping with sleep conditions, reducing chronic pain, PTSD, epilepsy, tumour reduction, reducing spasms, convulsions and much, much more.
So what's next is to decide whether you need the subtle effects of CBD or the more intense effects of THC and to consult your doctor today to get access to Australian Medicinal Cannabis.
