What is the Endocannabinoid System and how does it work?
In 1990 scientists discovered that internally our bodies have what is now known as an endocannabinoid system. Essentially it is cannabis-like molecules produced by the human body. This system evolved over 500 million years ago and is present in all vertebrates.
Ongoing research is continuing to reveal more and more about this system - scientists have found that we have receptors all throughout the body, including in our skin, immune system, cells, bones, fat tissue, liver, pancreas, skeletal muscle, heart, blood vessels, kidney and gastrointestinal tract.
This wonderful system that reaches every part of our internal structure is involved in a wide variety of processes, including pain, memory, mood, appetite, stress, sleep, metabolism, immune function and reproductive function. If our endocannabinoid system is not functioning correctly or unbalanced, then your whole body could be at risk.
Bring in Medicinal Cannabis….
Medicinal cannabis has been used throughout history for a long time, but the full potential and effect was never quite understood. However, with the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in 1990 and due to the ongoing research around medicinal cannabis, we are starting to piece it altogether.
Medicinal cannabis, mostly CBD oil at this stage, has become quite the talking point due to all the potential benefits. More and more people are gaining access to it and finding that it is very beneficial for helping with their health ailments or making side effects more manageable. So why is that?
Once medicinal cannabis is added into the human body it then mimics the natural endocannabinoids and receptors found within the body. Through this the medicinal cannabis has the ability to increase the natural production of cannabinoids and in turn keeps balance within the endocannabinoid system. The biggest breakthrough with this is the life changing development that CBD may have the unique ability to cross through the body's natural protection of the brain known as the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB is so efficient it stops some life saving medicines from accessing the brain.
Understanding the endocannabinoid system is another step to advancing health care in the modern world. This one system helps to regulate every aspect of our well-being, it is the bridge between our mind and our body and is one of the most versatile systems known to man!
